Consider Having an Open House to Sell Your Home

I honestly think that one of the main reasons people use real estate agents is because they don’t want to deal with any aspect of selling their own home. People don’t want to “stoop” to sell anything because it seems like a lowly activity. Is that how you feel when you think about selling your home? Well let me tell you something, that’s not how I think about it!  I am proud to be able to sell my home, especially to sell my home myself.  There is nothing lowly about selling your own home, in fact it’s a great skill to have because you can use it to use to save a lot of money by avoiding a real estate commission.

One of the main things that homeowners often have their real estate agent do for them is to hold an open house. I mean, how many people do you know who hold open houses for themselves?  I’ll bet you don’t know many, right?  The reason many be a personal distaste for selling, as I mentioned, or it may be that most people simply never think about holding an open house in their own home.  Actually, it’s a really good idea.

Unless you are very uncomfortable with the idea of letting people you don’t know come into your home, or you have reason to believe that you wouldn’t be safe for some reason, I would seriously consider hosting an open house yourself. First, you’ll want to store anything that you might not want people to see, and of course consider what other friends or family members you’d like to be in your home with you during the scheduled open house hours. I don’t say this to infer that there’s a safety issue, not at all, just that thinking ahead about anything you choose to do about security for your own comfort is a wise plan. Personally, I conduct open houses by myself and do not worry about any issues or losses. So far I’ve had no problems at all holding an open house to sell my home.

Schedule the date and time and advertise that information in free online classifieds, in your local newspaper, and on flyers and posters around the neighborhood. Your neighbors may not personally need a new home in the neighborhood, but they may very well know someone else who will be interested.

Meeting with new people and talking to them about friends, relatives and co-workers who might be looking for a new home in the area is simply the best way to get people talking about your home for sale and tell someone who may want to see it and buy it.
